Field dimensions for softball: the standard diamond
Softball is played on a diamond noticeably smaller than a baseball field, and because everything is closer together, small layout errors have an outsized effect. A pitching plate a foot too close changes the game; a base path a few inches long affects every force play. The dimensions below come from the governing bodies for high school, college and amateur softball. When a field is built in synthetic turf, those numbers are set permanently in the base and inlaid lines before any carpet goes down, which is why the Sports Turf Manager installation team partners treat layout as a surveying job first and a turf job second.
Softball field dimensions by level
Base paths are the one constant; pitching and fence distances change with level and game type. Always confirm against the current rulebook for the league you are building for, since fence recommendations are updated periodically.
| Level | Base paths | Pitching distance | Outfield fence (typical) | Governing body |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| High school fastpitch | 60 ft | 43 ft | 185 to 235 ft | NFHS |
| NCAA fastpitch (women) | 60 ft | 43 ft | 190 to 235 ft; 220 ft recommended minimum | NCAA |
| USA Softball adult women fastpitch | 60 ft | 43 ft | 220 to 250 ft | USA Softball |
| USA Softball adult men fastpitch | 60 ft | 46 ft | 250 ft | USA Softball |
| Youth fastpitch (12U and under) | 60 ft | 35 to 40 ft | 175 to 200 ft | USA Softball, Little League Softball |
| Adult slowpitch | 65 ft (USA Softball) or 70 ft (some leagues) | 50 ft | 275 to 300 ft and up | USA Softball, USSSA |
How long is a softball field, then? From home plate to the center field fence, a high school or NCAA field is roughly 200 to 235 feet, compared with 400 feet or more for baseball. The compact size is why softball fields fit on sites that could never hold a regulation baseball diamond, and why they are popular candidates for turf conversion.
Infield layout details that have to be right
Beyond the headline numbers, several infield measurements define a regulation field and are easy to get wrong.
- Home plate to second base. With 60-foot base paths, the diagonal from the back point of home plate to the center of second base is 84 feet 10 1/4 inches. This squares the diamond.
- Pitcher’s circle. 16 feet in diameter, centered on the front edge of the pitching plate, which is 24 inches wide and 6 inches deep, set level with the ground.
- Batter’s boxes. 3 feet by 7 feet, 6 inches from the plate. The catcher’s box extends 10 feet behind the plate and is 8 feet 5 inches wide.
- Bases. 15 inches square. First base is usually a double base with the orange safety half in foul territory, which changes how the anchor is set.
- Skinned infield. Usually fully skinned, with the grass line arc at a 60-foot radius from the front of the pitching plate at most fastpitch levels.
- Backstop. Typically 25 feet behind home plate.
Softball shares many layout principles with youth baseball; if your facility hosts both, our page on Little League field dimensions shows where the two diamonds overlap and conflict.
Pro tip: set home and second from the 84 ft 10 1/4 in diagonal, then triangulate first and third from both points. Measuring base to base around the square accumulates error.

Getting the layout right on a turf softball build
A grass and clay field can be re-measured every season. A synthetic turf softball field cannot. Lines, circle and boxes are inlaid into the carpet as permanent colored turf, and the base anchors and pitching plate are set into the compacted base. If the layout is off by six inches on install day, it is off for the life of the field.
- Survey and set control pointsThe back point of home plate and the center of second base are established with surveying equipment and marked with permanent monuments outside the work area so they can be recovered after grading.
- Grade and compact the baseThe aggregate base is laser-graded to the designed slope, typically a gentle crown or a fall toward perimeter drains, and compacted in lifts. Softball infields are small enough that a slight grading error creates a visible birdbath, so tolerances are tight.
- Set anchors and the pitching plateBase anchors and the pitching plate are located from the control points and set in the base at finished grade, checked for level, before any turf is rolled out.
- Lay turf and inlay linesField turf is laid, then foul lines, batter’s boxes, the pitcher’s circle and any skinned-area color changes are cut in and seamed as inlays, measured again from the control points rather than from the turf edges.
- Infill and verifyInfill is applied and broomed, and the final layout is measured one more time against the rulebook before the field is signed off.
The drainage, base and infill decisions on a softball turf conversion are the same ones that govern any diamond; our turf baseball fields page goes deeper on infill systems, skinned-area turf and how synthetic diamonds hold up to cleats and slides. The difference on softball is simply that the smaller field leaves less room to hide a mistake.
Who should build a softball field
Layout work calls for a crew that understands both the rulebook and construction tolerances. On a synthetic build, that means experience with laser grading, permanent anchor placement and inlaid lines. Ask any contractor how they establish control points, what grading tolerance they work to, and whether they have built regulation softball fields that have hosted sanctioned play. Sports Turf Manager works with experienced installers who have done exactly that, and we can connect you with crews offering professional turf installation for diamonds that measure correctly on opening day and every day after.
Softball field dimensions FAQ
What are high school softball field dimensions?
HS softball field dimensions under NFHS rules are 60-foot base paths, a 43-foot pitching distance and an outfield fence generally between 185 and 235 feet, with a backstop about 25 feet behind home plate.
What are NCAA softball field dimensions?
NCAA softball uses 60-foot base paths and a 43-foot pitching distance. Fence distances typically fall between 190 and 235 feet, with 220 feet commonly cited as the recommended minimum for new construction.
How long is a softball field from home plate to the fence?
Roughly 200 to 235 feet to center field for high school and college fastpitch, and 275 to 300 feet or more for adult slowpitch. Baseball fields, by comparison, run 400 feet or more to center.
What is the softball field size compared to baseball?
Softball base paths are 60 feet versus 90 feet for baseball, pitching distance is 43 feet versus 60 feet 6 inches, and fences are roughly half the distance. A softball field occupies well under half the area of a regulation baseball field.
