Flag Football Field Dimensions (NFL Flag, 5v5 & 7v7)

Field sizes for the common flag football formats, plus how planners lay out multiple flag fields on a single synthetic surface. Planning a project? Start with our artificial turf installation guide.

Flag football field dimensions are smaller and more flexible than tackle football, which is exactly why the sport fits so well on multi-use synthetic surfaces. One full-size turf field can host several flag games at once if the layout is planned before the lines go in. If you are building or upgrading, turf for flag football fields starts with knowing which format you will play.

Quick answer The NFL FLAG 5v5 field is 25 yards wide and 50 yards long, with 10-yard end zones on each end, for a total length of 70 yards. Youth leagues often adjust length and end zone depth by age, and 7v7 is commonly played on 40 yards of a standard football field plus one end zone, at full 53 1/3-yard width.

Flag football field dimensions by format

There is no single flag football field size. The table below covers the formats you are most likely to see. Always confirm with your league’s current rulebook, since local leagues modify these.

FormatField of playEnd zonesNotes
NFL FLAG 5v550 yards long x 25 yards wide10 yards eachMidfield is the line to gain; no-run zones before midfield and the end zone
Youth leagues (various)Often 40 to 50 yards long x 25 to 30 yards wide5 to 10 yardsYounger divisions frequently use shorter fields
7v7 (passing leagues)Commonly 40 yards long x 53 1/3 yards wideOne 10-yard end zoneTypically played on half of a regulation football field

How long is a flag football field?

For NFL FLAG, the full length including both end zones is 70 yards, which is 210 feet. With the 25-yard width, the playing surface is roughly 70 by 25 yards. Plan for extra space around the perimeter for team areas, officials and safety runoff. NFL FLAG materials recommend a total footprint of a few yards beyond the field on each side.

A 7v7 field using 40 yards plus a 10-yard end zone is 50 yards long, and since it uses the full football width, it is wider than a 5v5 field.

Flag football field layout and markings

A typical NFL FLAG layout includes:

  • Goal lines and end lines at each end
  • A midfield line that serves as the line to gain
  • No-run zones, commonly marked 5 yards before midfield and 5 yards before each goal line, where only passing plays are allowed
  • Sidelines, often with cones or pylons at the corners and at midfield

On temporary layouts these are set with cones and painted lines. Our guide to athletic field paint covers which paints work on grass and on synthetic turf and how to remove them between seasons.

Fitting multiple flag fields on one turf surface

A regulation football field is 120 yards long including end zones and 53 1/3 yards wide. Turned sideways, that space can hold several 5v5 flag fields running across the width, which is how many complexes run youth leagues on Saturdays.

  1. Choose the primary sportDecide which lines are permanent (usually football or soccer) and which formats will be painted or coned.
  2. Map the flag fieldsLay 5v5 fields across the width of the main field, leaving buffer zones between them for players and spectators.
  3. Pick a line strategyInlaid turf lines are permanent and low-maintenance. Painted lines in a different color are flexible and can be removed. Many facilities use small inlaid tick marks to make repainting fast and accurate.
  4. Plan for wearFlag games put concentrated traffic at the same spots every week. Infill depth and regular grooming keep those zones from matting down.

Pro tip: settle the full line plan before the turf is installed. Adding inlaid lines later means cutting into a finished surface. The same applies to other uses of the field; if you also host baseball or softball, mound placement matters too, as covered in pitching mound dimensions.

Planning a flag football field

Whether you are building a dedicated youth flag field or a multi-use complex, a flat, well-draining surface and accurate markings matter more than anything else. An installer who builds athletic fields can help you plan layouts, inlay or mark lines precisely and choose a turf system suited to flag play. Start with professional turf installation from experienced local crews.
