Turf Around a Pool: Design Ideas and What to Know

Design layouts for synthetic grass beside a pool, what chlorine and salt water do to it, how to keep it cooler, and why hardscape transitions need careful fastening. Planning a project? Start with our artificial turf installation guide.

Turf around a pool solves a problem natural grass never could: a soft green surface at the water’s edge that does not turn to mud, track clippings into the pool or die from chlorinated splash-out. Done well, artificial grass around a pool drains splash water in seconds and gives bare feet somewhere comfortable to land. The details that make it work are below the surface and at the edges, which is why pool-area turf installation is a specialty rather than a standard lawn job.

Quick answer Artificial turf is a good fit around a pool as long as it drains fast, is secured at every hardscape edge and uses a lighter-colored, heat-reducing fiber or infill. Chlorine and salt water do not harm quality polyethylene turf, but standing water and loose edges will shorten its life. The most common layouts are a turf border between coping and patio, turf lounging zones set into the deck, and turf lawns that run from the pool deck to the fence.

Turf around pool ideas that work

A few layouts come up again and again because they look right and function well.

  • Green ribbon. A 2 to 4 foot strip of turf between the pool coping and a paver or concrete patio. It softens the hard edges, catches splash and gives a place to drop a towel.
  • Lounge islands. Rectangles of turf cut into a paver deck, sized for a pair of chaises. The turf stays cooler than pavers and keeps furniture feet from scraping.
  • Turf-and-paver grid. Large square pavers set with turf joints, running from the deck into the yard. Clean, modern and very easy to drain.
  • Full back lawn. Turf from the far edge of the pool deck to the fence, replacing the patchy grass that pool chemicals usually kill.
  • Curved pool surround. Turf following a curved, organic pool shape so there is no hard deck at all, with a narrow coping as the only transition.

Whatever the layout, keep at least 18 to 24 inches of hard coping or deck between the water and the turf edge where people climb out. That strip gives feet a place to dry and keeps constant foot-dragging off the turf seam.

Chlorine, salt water and sunscreen

Quality turf fibers are UV-stabilized polyethylene and the backing is polyurethane or latex; none are affected by pool chlorine or salt at normal concentrations. Splash-out drains through and leaves nothing behind. Where turf gets into trouble near pools is from what sits on it: sunscreen and body oils that build a film, pool shock dumped on the surface, and leaves or algae in a wet, shaded corner. A monthly rinse with mild detergent handles the film; handle chemicals on hardscape, not turf.

Pro tip: brush pool-side turf against the grain after heavy use. Wet fibers get pressed flat by chairs and feet, and brushing them back up before they dry keeps the surface from matting.

Keeping turf around a pool deck cooler

Synthetic turf runs hotter than natural grass in sun, and bare feet notice. The fix is partly design and partly product.

ApproachHow it helps
Lighter fiber colors with tan or olive thatchReflects more sunlight than deep uniform green
Heat-reducing or coated infillLowers surface temperature compared with dark crumb rubber; avoid rubber entirely near pools
Shade structures and umbrellas over lounging zonesShaded turf stays dramatically cooler than turf in full sun
Quick hose or spray-downEvaporative cooling drops surface temperature within a minute
Hardscape walking pathsLight pavers for the main route, turf for sitting and lounging

Splash from swimmers does a good job of keeping pool-edge turf cool during the day, which is one reason the green-ribbon layout is so popular.

Drainage: the detail that decides everything

A pool surround sees far more water than an ordinary lawn: splash-out, cannonballs, rinsing and sometimes backwash. Build it on 3 to 4 inches of open-graded crushed stone, compacted but permeable, falling away from the pool at 1 to 2 percent. Where turf meets coping or deck, the hard surface should sit slightly higher so runoff does not slip under the turf edge. Use a high-flow or fully permeable backing and sand or coated infill rather than rubber, and never let the deck drain into the turf base unless that base has its own outlet.

If the surround is a slab or an existing deck rather than soil, the method changes. Installing artificial turf on concrete requires a drainage mat or pad beneath the turf, confirmed slope on the slab, and adhesive rather than nails. On a raised structure, artificial turf on a deck adds the need for gaps or scuppers so water can leave the deck surface instead of sitting against the backing.

Securing turf at coping, pavers and deck edges

Lifting edges are the most common failure around pools. Turf expands in heat, feet drag across the same transition hundreds of times a day, and wet chair legs catch the edge. The fix is in how the perimeter is built:

  • Set a rigid edge restraint, such as bender board, steel edging or a mortared paver header, wherever turf meets soil or planting beds.
  • At coping and paver edges, bond the turf backing to a hidden header strip or to the hardscape itself with turf adhesive, not just nails.
  • Keep the finished turf surface flush with or a hair below the coping so there is no lip to trip on or kick up.
  • Run seams perpendicular to the pool edge where possible so a single seam does not take the full brunt of traffic along the coping.
  • Brush infill fully to the edge; a starved edge curls first.

A crew that has built pool surrounds before does these steps without being asked; one that has not will nail the edge and move on. Astro turf around a pool is not a place to experiment, so ask installers how they grade the base relative to the deck, what backing and infill they use near water, how they fasten turf to coping, and whether they can show pool surrounds a few seasons old. To find crews who build pool-side turf to that standard, start with professional turf installation and describe your layout and how the deck drains today.

Turf around pool FAQ

Does chlorine damage artificial grass around a pool?

No. Polyethylene fibers and polyurethane backings are unaffected by pool chlorine or salt at normal concentrations. Rinse off sunscreen and oils periodically and keep chemicals off the turf surface.

Does artificial turf around a pool get too hot?

It gets warmer than natural grass in full sun. Lighter fibers, heat-reducing infill, shade and a quick spray-down keep it comfortable. Splash from swimmers helps cool the edges naturally.

How do you install turf around a pool deck?

Excavate, build a permeable compacted stone base sloped away from the pool, set edge restraints, lay high-drainage turf, bond edges to coping and headers with adhesive, then brush in a non-rubber infill.

What are the best turf around pool ideas for a small yard?

A narrow green ribbon between coping and patio, or two lounge islands cut into pavers, gives the softening effect without giving up walking space.
